SEO Content Checklist for Shopify Brands
Most Shopify stores I audit have the same gap: solid product photography and a decent theme, but almost no content strategy behind the pages that could actually be driving organic traffic. Here's the checklist I run through with every e-commerce client before we touch a single blog post.
1. Fix Your Collection Pages First
Collection pages usually get the most organic traffic potential on a Shopify store, yet they're often left as a bare product grid. Add a genuinely useful 150-300 word intro above the fold that answers what the shopper is looking for and how to choose between options — this alone moves rankings for competitive category terms.
2. Write Product Descriptions for Humans, Not Just Search
Templated, feature-only descriptions rank poorly and convert worse. Every product page should answer the real question a buyer has: who is this for, how is it different from the obvious alternative, and what happens if it doesn't work out (returns, sizing, guarantees).
3. Build a Blog That Supports the Buying Journey
Skip generic "industry news" posts. The highest-ROI content for e-commerce answers pre-purchase questions directly — buying guides, comparison posts, and "how to use/care for X" content that naturally links back to product and collection pages.
- Buying guides that compare your own product tiers
- "vs" comparison posts against the alternative a customer is actually considering
- Care, sizing, and troubleshooting guides that reduce returns and build trust
4. Don't Neglect Technical Basics
Image alt text, clean URL structures, and page speed still matter enormously for Shopify specifically, since app bloat is one of the most common speed killers I see. A content strategy built on a slow site is fighting an uphill battle before a single word is published.
Where to Start
If you can only do one thing this month, fix your top three collection pages. It's the fastest lever in this whole list, and it's usually the one most brands skip.
